A vindsvåning (attic apartment) is a home fitted on the top floor of a building, often with sloped ceilings, skylights, and open floor plans. In major cities like Stockholm and Gothenburg, attic conversions have become enormously popular — raw attics are transformed into exclusive residences with views and natural light through skylights and dormers.
Attic apartments exist as both rental and cooperative apartments. Newly produced attic cooperatives are among the most expensive per square meter on the Swedish housing market. Attic conversions require building permits and must meet requirements for fire safety, sound, accessibility, and energy. As a tenant in an attic apartment, be aware that temperatures can vary more — hot in summer and cold in winter if insulation is inadequate.
